The workshop was held at St. Joseph Higher Secondary, Ooty. Ms. Merlyn, the Counselor and Ms. Nancy, the Legal Assistant attended the workshop.

Keyspeakers for the Workshop:

Mr. Gerurt Primus, Deputy Inspector of CEO’s Office

Fr. Periyanayagam, Principal of St. Joseph Higher Secondary

Dr. Ramesh, Psychiatrist

Key Takeaways from the Workshop:

  1. Awareness as a Strategy:The primary strategy to reduce drug use among students is creating awareness among students, teachers, and parents.

  2. Role Models:School staff should act as role models, ensuring they do not bring prohibited substances to school premises.

  3. Effects of Drugs and Alcohol: The physical and mental effects of drugs and alcohol were discussed in detail. Alcohol can exacerbate behavioural problems and even induce psychosis.

  4. Impact on Crime Rates:There is a strong correlation between drug use and increased crime rates. Despite high literacy rates, substance use remains prevalent among both youth and adults, highlighting the need for greater awareness to bridge this gap.

  5. Stigma Around Mental Illness: Mental illness continues to be stigmatized, and children are often not evaluated for psychological issues because parents and teachers fail to recognize the importance of timely intervention and evaluation.

  6. Parental Responsibility:Parents must be cautious about the content their children are exposed to on television or social media, as it can desensitize them to harmful behaviours.

  7. Regular Checks in Schools: Schools should implement regular checks of students' bags and belongings to ensure prohibited substances are not brought onto the premises.

  8. Counseling for Students: Counseling is recommended as the first step for students who may begin using drugs out of curiosity.
