Tucked
in the bosom of the Nilgiris, lies a small village of Lovedale about
six kilometres from Ootacamund, a popular holiday resort universally
known as Ootty.
Lovedale
is situated at about 7,200 feet above sea level and enjoys a temperate
climate throughout the year. The setting is serene, sylvan and ideal
for students to undertake trekking, nature study and adventure camp
activities. The environment is tranquil and in harmony with nature providing
an excellent atmosphere for learning.
The Lawrence
School was founded on September 6 th 1858 by Major General Sir Henry
Lawrence,
who wanted to provide a sound education, in the healthy climate of the
Nilgiris, for the children of the British members of the Indian Army.
In May 1949 the School was taken over by the Indian Government. Then,
in September 1949, the Indian Union Colour was presented to the school,
replacing the old Trooping of the King's colour.
Today,
The Lawrence School is run as a public school, open to all, with forty
percent of the seats reserved for the children of defence personnel.
The school is neither elitist nor exclusive. Children are drawn from
every region and community of India. Various scholarship schemes bring
the chance of an education here to the less privileged. The children
are raised in this universal atmosphere, where every creed, community
and caste is accorded equal respect.
The Lawrence
School rejects the artificial environment of the single sex school.
Co-education is a
cornerstone
of our effort to breed an open community, free from discrimination,
where many discover the fruits of a different experience. Together from
childhood , inside and outside the classroom, boys and girls come to
respect and be enriched by each others' judgements. Mixed company teaches
us that there is always more than one approach to everything.
We hope this
presentation will convey something of the enriching quality of life
and opportunities offered to all those fortunate enough to spend their
formative years at The Lawrence School.
